Nervous cough and Bach Flower Remedies

In 2015, the American College of Chest Physicians introduced the term ‘somatic cough syndrome” to rename the “psychosomatic cough” which is know by all of us as “nervous cough”.

This cough has the particularity of being chronic. However it is not due to medical conditions such as GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), asthma, rhinosinusitis, lung disease, bronchitis or tobacco smoking. This somatic cough has no obvious medical etiology and it persists despite medical treatment. The reason for this chronic cough is psychological: a psychological distress is transferred into a physical symptom. This produces a “tic[1] cough”.

It is remarkable that most of the patients suffering from somatic cough syndrome don’t cough while sleeping. This reinforces the results of several studies conducted in France, Germany and US in which anxiety, depression and stress scores were in an abnormal range. That led to conclude that stress, anxiety and depression play an important role in the syndrome.

For this reason, complementary therapies such as Bach Flower Remedies are useful in this case to dissolve the psychological distress which causes the cough as a symptom.

The Bach Flower Remedies represent 38 archetypal soul states that are classified in seven groups: fear, uncertainty, lack of interest, loneliness, oversensitivity, despair and overcare for others. When the personality is not connected to the great cosmic energy field by its soul, not resonating in harmony with it, there is disruption, congestion, friction, distortion, disharmony, loss of energy. These conditions are first present in the subtle level but then progress to the material level, manifesting first in the form of negative mood and later in physical illness. These negative soul states that are the consequence of the conflict between the soul and the personality, can be treated with the Flower Remedies.

The flowers used by Doctor Edward Bach are from certain plants of a higher order. Each embodies certain soul quality; each one has a particular energy wavelength. Each of these “plant-based” soul qualities is in tune with a certain soul quality in the person. The Flower Remedy has the same harmonious energy frequency as the human soul quality concerned, but without distortion. The Flower Remedy has an affinity to the human soul quality and is able to establish a contact with it and its own harmonious frequency waves to re-establish harmony in the person’s soul.

As Doctor Bach wrote: “The action of these remedies is to raise our vibrations and open up our channels for the reception of the Spiritual Self; to flood our natures with the particular virtue we need, and wash out from the fault that is causing the harm. They are able, like beautiful music or any glorious uplifting thing which gives us inspiration, to raise our very natures, and bring us nearer to our souls and by that very act to bring peace and relieve our sufferings. They cure, not by attacking the disease, but by flooding our bodies with the beautiful vibrations of our Higher Nature, in the presence of which, disease melts away as snow in sunshine.”

The Bach Flower Therapy consists in a consultation with the therapist who after the interview will prepare the Remedy and will provide it to the healee.
